Hacienda Mexican Restaurants Menu

Hacienda suffers from the "Just put a sombrero on the menu" syndrome. My dears. You can't just SAY you serve Mexican food and then deliver that which isn't really Mexican food. Ach... Hacienda is a conundrum. It's not bad, but it's not good either. The food tastes fine-- but it's doused in cheese and mild sauces that just make it heavy. I've seen "soggy" listed on the reviews-- that's a good adjective. As far as chains go, I'd rather go to Pepe's. As far as Mexican food goes.... well, I try to stay away from chains.

There are plenty of reviews on here that let you know what's going down at this place, and instead of repeating what is said, I'll just make a few points: 1) The red salsa you get with the chips is probably the worst salsa I've ever eaten. I think Tomato Paste is the base for the salsa. You CAN improve it if you ask for the Green salsa (you can call it "Verde" if you want - I'm not taking chances, I want the GREEN STUFF!). Mix some green salsa in with the red, it breaks up the pastiness AND gives it some heat. Utliize the hot sauce as well. 2) I think the food has the quality value of Applebee's - and some people like Applebee's. It's not the greatest food you'll eat, but it is definitely satisfying. You certainly get plenty of food. If you leave hungry, it's your fault. I would suggest the "wet" black bean burrito (it's nice to eat vegetarian sometimes). My second favorite are the grilled burritos. These are 2 flour tortilla "flutes" filled with meat and cheese and then grilled so they have a crunchy outside. Used to be that you could get pork in these, and that was awesome. This comes with a side of rice and refrieds. Very good. I had their chicken soft taco and it was cheesy and kind of sloppy and big. I actually enjoyed it. 3) I had a margarita here once made with Patron Silver. That was really silly. But, it was a "Make Your Own Margarita" deal, and I wanted to try Patron. It was good, but totally unnecessary. They have an excellent selection of tequilla, and within the past year, they also got an excellent selection of craft beer. I was expecting there to be Guiness and Harp, Heineken and Amstel, but no; they had a lot of Michigan and Indiana beers. 4) I've never found service to be a problem, but then, every time except 1, it has been for lunch. The other time was with a large group. So overall, I think that if you want to fill up, Hacienda is a good place to go. If you're drinking soda, you can get out of there for around $12-13, but you'll leave full. Is it the best "Mexican" food you will eat? No. As a side note, if you're looking for the TV, it's only in the bar. So nice that they don't have TV in the restaurant part.

Ordered the Haciend Wrap with the seasoned waffle fries...WOW!! VERY tasty and quite filling. I probably shouldn't have eaten the whole thing, but I did. :-) Great food and our server, Debbie, was awesome! Extremely polite and friendly with a great personality! "Two thumbs up"!

Great chips and salsa, margaritas, food, staff! Love this place! Little bit of a drive but worth every bite

"I only come here to drink with my friends". But the shrimp fajita salad with avo ranch dressing went well with that liter of margaritas! Love "Mom" Deb, tip well!

All I have to say about this place is that if you like Taco Bell, you'll love this place. This might say it's a Mexican restaurant, but I know it isn't....The only reason I went is that my niece likes it....Otherwise I would pass....

Nice patio for warm weather. Inside dining is okay, but kinda noisy and loud t.v. most times. Low key atmosphere and friendly staffers. Food's pretty consistent - not fab but decent. Have to watch freshness on some toppings, just order "on the side" and no problem.

Just ate here on a trip home. Was surprised to see the low rating. This place is fantastic, and I've been eating here all my life. Authentic or not, the price is right, the food is good and the portions are very fair. Even living in California, and knowing "better", I'd gladly eat here for the taste and atmosphere alone. Always good service and a good time. See ya next time I'm in town!

Seems like they have given up. Really sad because we used to love this place. Tables and floor seemed dirty and the wet burrito seemed like it was microwaved not cooked. Hope they turn it around soon.

The food is ok not great. My husband and I love Mexican food and this place is very bland. The salsas are not good at all. Margaritas are tasty.

Since moving down south to Indy, any time I come up North, I have to stop at Hacienda. I know its not authentic, and that the food overall isn't 5 star, but something keeps driving me back! The delicious chips and salsas (try the new green salsa!), and the Hacienda ranch are enough for a quick stop. If I am in the mood for a full meal, a small wet burrito always does the trick as does the 3 fresh tacos. The margaritas are also usually pretty good!

Best salsa and chips! The food is tasty, not really authentic Mexican, but tasty nonetheless. Service is never disappointing.

Awesome food. My whole family loves this place! My sister even had her rehearsal here. Love everything on the menu!

Being that this restaurant is literally blocks away from our lake house, it is an easy stop for that random snack or drink before heading home. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely places around Michigan City that serve better and more authentic Mexican food, but if you want a quick and cheap dinner, Hacienda's got you covered. We stopped in to grab some sangria and an exorbitant amount of chips and salsa and guacamole before bed. Hacienda delivered on all accounts. The sangria is decent (we got a liter for $16), the salsa is pretty good (but not chunky like I like it, but good flavor and spice), and the table side guacamole is delicious. They literally make it at your table. Sucks for servers but it's a nice touch for us. Service is slightly lacking, but I'll be damned if I care once I get the goods listed above.

The triple trifecta of a terrible restaurant. Bad service, bad food, bad / dirty ambience. Everything about this place is BAD. Stay away!

    Slowest service ever. Weak drinks.

I'm going to quote other reviewers here and describe it as "white people mexican food" and a Mexican Applebees. That pretty much sums it up. Food is meh. Margaritas are OK. Service is OK. Chips and salsa are tastier coming from the grocery store. Summation: Don't bother.

  • Natalie S.

2 words: Chips, salsa. LOVE IT! Food has been hit and miss lately, but i've been coming for years and it's always been a family go-to for big groups. Definitely typical american mexican food.

Awful food. Got the Seafood echillada and tried to dig in on my food trying to find shrimp and all it had is imitation crab nothing more. Topped with some cheese which i can just do at home on my microwave. Had 2 bites and gave up and gave it to my husband and he didnt even touch it. Service is mediocre the waiter didnt know what he was doing.

There is nothing Mexican about this place. The food is mediocre! Fried Ice cream was good. The soda even taste off. The staff wasn't very friendly and they were totally confused. Do not waste your time here. If you want real Mexican food the best place to go is a run down joint on a deserted road. they always offer the best authentic food!!

Chilles Rellenos with a bell pepper...forget about it.

My go-to local Mex joint. This is NOT your typical Mexican or Tex-Mex restaurant. It's Hacienda Mexican, they have their own flair on Mexican food. First off, the chips and salsa are good... If you do it right. Local secret, you HAVE to order the ranch and the green salsa and dip in all three on the same bite. Soooo tasty! The frozen margaritas are my favorite I've had anywhere. If they have blue raspberry, you must order that. Otherwise, a strawberry and regular mix is a solid choice. Food-wise, get the ground beef wet burrito w/extra lettuce and tomatoes, the fish tacos (if you like fish tacos), or the burrito combo with the white chili. The Hacienda cheese dip is a good choice for an appetizer and the chocolate mountain mudslide for dessert. I've never had a problem with service except when I get a particular waitress, but at least I can prepare for what's to come.

Shrimp tacos and fish tacos skimped on the seafood and were swimming in a salty, greasy sauce. The rice was hard - either old or undercooked. Red salsa tasted like ketchup, green salsa tasted like spicy relish. One member of our party is allergic to seafood, so she ordered a plain quesadilla. She bit it, tasted/smelled shrimp on the tortilla, and promptly suffered an allergic reaction. The server neglected our drink and water refills and we had to ask another server to get her for our bill so we could leave. Will drive into New Buffalo to eat next time we are in the area.

  • Jaime P.

The atmosphere is first rate...the food, as it always has been is less than mediocre. It's like they run to a grocery store, buy up the frozen food, heat it up and then serve it. The owners of this chain need to take a trip to Austin Texas and dine a few TexMex places and then adjust their menu accordingly. I won't be back. Ever.

Had their "famous" wet burrito and a pork chimichanga. The ground beef in the burrito was over seasoned. The flavor was straight out of the McCormick's packet. Sent right back to the kitchen. The chimichanga was bland and tiny. Very unsatisfying portion size. The refried beans were runny. The salsa tasted like the tomatoes were from a can. In all, a dissatisfying experience. Leaving hungry, but not ordering anything else here.

I attended a rehearsal dinner here last week. It was a group of about 40 and they'd reserved an entire outdoor patio for us- nice! We had 3 servers dedicated solely to our group, which was really generous. Beau was the best!! He was super nice and super fast. The other two had bad attitudes, and weren't as available or pleasant. I'm mostly giving it 2 stars for the food. When you go to a chain Mexican restaurant, you don't have really high expectations because you pretty much know what you're going to get. It will not be authentic, but it'll be decent enough. The food we were served was honestly not appetizing and really not good. Starting with the chips and salsa put out on the tables- the salsa looked like ketchup- and didn't taste so far off from it, either! Where were the chunks of tomato, pepper and onion? I picked the wet black bean burrito with a side of rice and beans. The baja lime sauce for the "wet" part of the burrito looked and tasted exactly like heated up sour cream. Gross. Inside, there were no wet ingredients to kind of hold the whole thing together. It was a dried up tortilla filled with dried black beans and dried up green peppers and onions. There were no tomatoes, no lettuce, no cheese. Both the rice and beans were so dry and tasteless that I only ate a forkful or two of each. Horrible. It was so bad that I feel like you'd have to TRY to make it this gross. Margaritas were excellent, though! You guys got something right!

There's Mexican Mexican food, American Mexican food and then there's food of an uncertain origin that identifies itself as Mexican. Hacienda would fall into the latter of these three categories. Although the food may look relatively inexpensive on the menu, Hacienda charges you, the diner, for everything not identified on the menu as being a part of the dish. You want sour cream? CHA-CHING: $.59. Ranch dressing on the side? CHA-CHING: $1.99. Crappy guacamole? CHA-CHING: $.79. Free refills? Maybe... you had better look to be sure. Anyway, you get the idea. The menu says "$$", the bill says "$$$", the food says "$". I'm pretty sure I would rather eat at Taco Bell, take in some better food and save some money in the process.

I'm from Elkhart, IN so I grew up with Hacienda locations all around me in Elkhart & South Bend area. I live in Chicago suburbs now and drive to Michigan City on average of once a month just for chips and salsa. Hacienda is known for their chips, salsa, and wet burritos. Whether you want to call it authentic or not, it is hands down my favorite burrito and I've never had salsa that even comes close. Most places serve this Pace like crap. I think they are getting a little stingy though. 20 years ago or so they used to bring out a jar of salsa, then they started bringing everyone at table an individual cup. When I was there on Sunday with party of 4, they brought us 2 salsas. We asked for 2 more and they brought it, but waitress said management pushing to only bring 1 per 2 people unless people ask for more. People don't like dipping chips into salsa other people are dipping into regardless if they're not even double dipping. Don't be stingy Hacienda.

there's mo' than corn in indy. there's air-conditioned mediocre mexican food on a hot summer memorial weekend day. a very cute friend and i ventured up here after getting the tour of the fancy beach homes on the lake. we were STARVED after the 1.5 hr trip and dying to eat anything. we weren't expecting too much - all we cared about was that there was nourishment in the building. there was a gentleman waiting for us at the door when we arrived. i thought he was going to show us to a table, but his only job was to say hello and show us the door. i kinda hesitated, thinking he was going to move from his post. guess again. our eyes were way hungrier than our stomachs. we started off with the guac & chips, which were made in front of us. sans cilantro, of course. of everything, we gobbled that right up. the salsa tasted like tomato sauce, unfortunately. i ordered the steak fajitas and he ordered the cobb salad. we didn't get far. i was stuffed already but he devoured his salad since it probably wasn't a good idea to take it home. OH! i mustn't forget we ordered 2 margs on the rocks each. mugs, not glasses. um. they were really sweet but did the job and got me hammered. the bartender was very nice, but she slowly became busier and busier and we slowly began to be forgotten. no biggie, it's okay. coming from chicago (and two people who love mexican food), we didn't LOVE it. we obvi loved the margs more.

Myself and two friends had our credit cards hacked and used within two weeks of paying at this restaurant. It was the only place where the three of us used those cards for more than four months before since two of us live out of town. Go there and you risk having your money stolen. The police aren't doing anything. Protect yourself.

I frequently visit this Hacienda for their free chips/salsa(very good!) and delicious frozen margaritas. Their entres leave much to be desired-this is full-blown "American-style" Mexican Restaurant. Not at all authentic. Service, depending on your draw, can be hit or miss. Nevertheless I keep coming back so i can't dock them too hard, right? No on likes a hypocrite.

Holy crap! A mexican applebees. Got seated, had to get our own menus. Hamburgers? Hotdogs? Cheesesticks? Paula Abdul music in the back ground? No server after 5 Min. C ya! This place is Mexican't.

Note This is for Plymouth, IN, but due to the fact that I could not locate them on Yelp i had to get this out there. Our server was nice, however that was the only thing good about Hacienda. The 40 min wait that we waited for 4 people was not worth it. We should have just kept driving. The salsa tasted like tomato paste with "spices" to which the server gave us 'pico de gallo' which wasn't much better. The chips were way salty. So then the 30 min wait for food. The burrito bowl was a waste. My mother and grandmother could not finish them because they were WAY toooo spicy and the food quality was poor. My husband and I both got tacos that were obviously under a heat lamp for quite some time. Overall, I would not recommend this chain of restaurants to anyone. Agave in Hobart and Villa Del Sol in Merriville is way better!!!!

There's something about Hacienda you just gotta love; one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Not authentic Mexican food, but a really fun American interpretation. I've been eating here for years, (long before the original joint burned to the ground and then rebuilt). The place is sometimes noisy, gets a little messy and the staff singing their Hacienda Happy Birthday song can get a bit tiresome; but the locals love this restaurant for birthdays and other special occasions. The free chips are warm, thin and crispy. The salsa is just OK, but the margaritas are fantastic. Try a burrito combo - the chicken & cheese burrito is STUFFED with white meat chicken and covered with melted cheese. Delicious! Prices are reasonable, (check out the food & drink specials). Friday and Saturday evenings are busy - expect a long wait. This is not a sophisticated foodie destination, but if you want a fun casual experience at a fair price - GO!

  • Amy S.

Dollar margaritas on Wednesday are a steal, if you can find a parking place, or a seat. Average wait time, any day of the week, is 45 minutes. The staff is composed of two different categories. Either they just turned sixteen yesterday and this IS their first job, or they have already been fired from sixteen stores at the outlet mall and ACT LIKE it is their first job. By the time your order is actually taken, it will take at least twice as long as you expect for it arrive, and it will most definitely arrive wrong. The food and decor are both cheap American bastardizations of Mexican culture. I would never even go there, but unfortunately, everyone else I know celebrates every single birthday there.

Location, location, location. The food is not great and the service is not great but it's in a great location. If you order the tamales, ask them to leave off the velveeta. It's not good.

  • Melissa C.

Not much of a step above Taco Bell. Lots of foods seem pre-made. Their dinner salad with the avocado ranch is really tasty so that bumps them to three stars.Their white chili is also pretty good. We use them frequently for taco and fajita platters at work. They are always able to put them together quickly so their service is great. Too bad their food is just so-so.

  • Elizabeth C.

You can get a better tasting meal at a fast food place, so don't let the relatively low prices fool you into thinking you deserve low quality fare. Our server was nice enough, but not experienced enough to figure out that each person at a table needs a menu, or that after a table asks for more menus, you should bring them instead of coming back ten minutes later--not with menus--but to take orders for food. That could be forgiven, if the food was acceptable. The tortilla chips tasted like cardboard. The salmon was rubbery. Maybe it was rubber. The fajita vegetables were cooked from frozen. This is my first review on Yelp even though I've been using it for some time. I felt compelled to post because this was the worst meal I've had in a long time. You'd be much better off eating a Mexican microwavable dinner, or going to one of the family friendly casual chain restaurants.

  • Mike D.

Average, to say the least. First off, the salsa. Wow. More like ketchup, nice try though. Ordered a frozen strawberry margarita and the waitress even explained how the frozen ones came in different glasses...yet she brought me out a lime Kirkland margarita from Costco one on the rocks that I am pretty sure was just straight up margarita mix. The one thing that was good was the jalepeno popper appetizer. The guacamole?? Yeah it was poo brown. We asked for some fresh guac and they brought out another poo brown guac. The fajitas, so average. The quesadilla, average. The grilled burrito was not bad but we quickly realized it just tasted like a shitty lake night mexican place that you only eat when drunk and that is the only reason we thought it tasted alright. The waitress? Average. The worst part about this meal is the raccoons that it spawned in all of our stomachs on the way home. I am giving it two stars and not one because we did not expect much. My brother is sitting in the bathroom now trying to throw up.

  • Tobin B.

Decent American Mexican food most of the time. Service is spotty at best. One of the kids spilled a drink (part of it was on me) and the staff "tip toed" around it rather than cleaning it up. This one not one of their better nights.

    (2)
  • Chris Z.

When the original Hacienda burned down it was probably one of the best days ever. This is your typical "white people mexican food". They might as well give you french fries with you burritos. I have no idea why but this is the "cool and hip" place to eat so it's always packed and the wait staff seems like all high school kids. Turn around and go to El Bracero if you want Mexican. They will not disapoint you like Hacienda will. It's on Franklin Street just south of Hwy 20 in front of big lots and mc sports. For the vegans and vegetarians the bean and rice are vegan friendly.

I've always had some pretty decent meals here but it will never be confused with Frontera. I like the wet burritos. Good beers and margaritas as well. Service is definately something that could be improved upon. Inexpensive so they got that going for them, which is good.

    (2)
  • Elizabeth B.

They have really gone downhill. The food is overpriced for what is mediocre at best. It lacks flavor and is really nothing special now. I was extremely disappointed with their fried ice cream. It is nothing more than frozen hard vanilla ice cream coated in cinnamon and sugar. Meh at best.

My 2nd trip here was very different from my first over a year ago. I planned one day getaway with family and made Hacienda a highlight because of my first time here being so awesome! This time around there were some real pros and real cons. A Mexican restaurants first impressions come from its ambiance and chips and salsa. We sat outside as it was a nice day, inside was loud and cold but it was a long weekend. The red salsa was more of a cold tomato and chili soup, not chunky pieces of ingredients that come together for a flavor dance in your mouth.. the chips were nice and thin, cold but restaurant quality. Our table side guac was accidentally made a bit too salty, but Nicole our very patient and polite waitress brought another mashed avocado and lime to even it out. Known for their Wet Burritos, and Chimichangas, I ordered a fajita and left the other two to my relatives. We were gonna share and try each others dishes anyways. Enchiladas were said to be salty, but everything was altered upon request. Management gets a big thumbs up for coming out and offering to pack up take home enchiladas. The refried beans recipe went through a big change, and now is more flavorful, and spicy. A big plus for us is that the beans are still vegetarian. I do still want to give this place the benefit of the doubt given how busy it always is. I remember being in a food coma driving back to Chicago after my first visit, so satisfying that black bean wet burrito was. I still would petition to have a location opened in the Chicago area to give us vegetarian mex lovers a real option. Great service, good food, awesome times.. I dont know if the family would want to come back here again on our next visit to Michigan City though, but I would..

Hacienda has just been smacked down for an advertising campaign alluding to the restaurant's alleged cult status with a reference to the Jim Jones Massacre of hundreds. The billboards feature the label "To Die For" on a drink. More likely "To Die From".

  • B G.

Ok, the food isn't the greatest, but it's Tex-Mex, what do you want?! What I like about this place is that they've gone completely smoke free! This is the first place in MC that I know of that is smoke free. If you want to take your kids out for dinner and not worry about them being too noisy, or inhaling second hand smoke, this is a good spot.

Worst. Meal. Ever. And I'm SO not kidding. I just went for the first time on Saturday night. Wasn't my choice but it's where my date wanted to go. So whatever. Looked promising at first. Parking lot was packed. The decor was cheesy, but in a good way. Our server knew her tequila and helped me pick out my own personalized margarita, which was yummy, but too small for $9. Oh, and the tortilla chips were warm and tasty. Table salsa was bland and not so good. Then the food. Wow. I ordered crab and shrimp quesidillas, which sounded good on the menu. The "crab" and "shrimp" appeared to be from a can and added to a "sauce" to heat through. The order was too small for an appetizer, let alone a $9 entree. Pretty darned bad. But it gets much, much worse. My date ordered the taco salad, with chicken. I can't fully describe how awful it was. Truly, you'd have to experience it yourself. The tortilla "bowl" was stale and eventually soggy with all the water they didn't get off of the iceberg lettuce before serving. So, chopped iceberg lettuce, maybe 5 slices of black olive, 5 small pieces of raw green pepper, and 10 small pieces of diced tomato. She ordered ranch dressing, which came on the side. It was tasteless and watery. And the chicken. Just...wow. You know how in the grocery store next to the canned tuna, they have a few cans of processed "chicken"? That's what they put on her salad. In a clump. Like, dumped straight from the can. With the packing water, which further puddled up the bottom of the "bowl". We were literally speechless. Our server was a peach but we couldn't get out of there fast enough. We stopped for a bite on the way back to her place. Bye bye $35. Save your money, folks. Taco Bell is better (and I hate Taco Bell).

Between the lack of any system for seating patrons and the awful food, the only redeeming part of the experience was our friendly and considerate server. The only member of our party that liked their food was my daughter who ordered a hotdog.

  • jiman ..

Its not the most authentic, but the options in the area are a little sparce, so it quickly becomes 'the' place to go for a wet burrito or frozen margaritas (get two single liters and swirl your own!). Its a great - get out of the cottage and have a meal place that is casual, quick and consistent. It does get crowded so bring the kids early to avoid the long wait.

As far as Mexican goes, this is a 2-star restaurant. As far as Mexican in Michigan City goes, this is probably 3-stars. The margaritas are definitely made from a mix. Not fresh. The sangria was a little too sweet. I'm sure the beer and wine are fine since they come from a bottle. The food was a split decision at the table. I ordered the tilapia tacos with pineapple salsa and baha sauce. I asked if the baha sauce was creamy and the waitress said no. Beware, it is absolutely creamy. Additionally, there were 3 diced chunks of pineapple on the side, which the restaurant considered salsa. Once I scraped off some of the sauce and got additional pineapple salsa, I thoroughly enjoyed the dish. My husband ordered the wet chicken burrito and said it tasted like someone wrapped shredded chicken in a tortilla. There was nothing cohesive about the dish. My father in law got quesadillas, which were fine. My mother in law got "Lotsa Chimichanga" (or a similar name) and thought it was very good! The salsa with the chips tasted like tomato sauce, but it was free so we ate it. The staff was very nice and attentive.

  • Marnie M.

This is the worst of the really bad. I get more satisfaction out of eating a Mexican tv dinner. Hacienda is NOT Mexican food and it's hardly "Tex-Mex". Call it what you want, bottom line your eating garbage here.

  • Phil A.

The only good things were bottled Coronas and margaritas. Oh, and the waitress was EXTREMELY friendly & brought lots of mediocre salsa for mediocre chips. The food completely underwhelms. Institutional food is a step up. Chipotle, metaphorically speaking, stomps a mudhole in this place. My plate of chicken enchiladas had rubbery cheese and unseasoned, dry chicken. My word, does any cook taste the substances put onto their plates?! This place is a "must-miss".

RUN, DON'T WALK, AWAY FROM THIS RESTAURANT!! My stomach is queasy from eating this food. We had the sampler platter, which was not horrific, but who could mess up fried food? I ordered the chicken & cheese burrito and guess what was in it? You guessed it ONLY chicken and cheese. Gross, Gross, Gross! I honestly am offended by this restaurant calling itself a mexican restaurant! Their salsa I think if ketchup! Their cheese soup is horrific! Go to El Bracero on Franklin for the Best Mexican Food in Michigan City.
